World Cup Roster Surprises, Reactions, and comments

England

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce believes goalkeeper Paul Robinson's absence from England's World Cup squad can only be down to personal issues on the part of Fabio Capello.
"I am staggered, totally. It is completely the wrong decision," he told the Lancashire Telegraph. "If you look at his form for Rovers, there has not been a better goalkeeper who has been so consistent.
Carragher quit England's national team three years ago, complaining he could never get a start under coach Steve McClaren. But the 32-year-old Liverpool defender was on the 30-man squad announced by Fabio Capello.

Brazil
Dunga did his best to compromise Brazil’s chances in South Africa. Milan duo Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato were sensationally snubbed from the final 23, as were ex-Inter man Adriano and the new starlet of Brazilian football Neymar.
AC Milan's Ronaldinho has been left out of Brazil's 23-man squad for this summer's World Cup in South Africa.
Instead of announcing a provisional 30-man squad, like the majority of other nations, Brazil coach Dunga chose instead to announce a squad of 23 on Tuesday, with seven other players on stand-by.

France
France Coach Raymond Domenech will not take striker Karim Benzema to the World Cup in South Africa, but says it has nothing to do with the player’s alleged involvement in a prostitution investigation.
I’m only thinking about football and about what the players want to give on the pitch,” Domenech said the day his preliminary World Cup roster was announced. ”He is a young player and he still can dream. I hope he will fight to come back to the team soon.”

USA
Charlie Davies, whose recovery from serious injuries sustained in a car accident last October had been fueled by hopes of playing in the World Cup, was left off the preliminary list of players for the United States roster.
Netherlands
Ruud van Nistelrooy, 34, was not on the Netherlands squad despite having recovered from a knee injury.
Italy
Marcello Lippi got the ball rolling in the early afternoon by selecting the most average bunch of forwards that Italy will ever choose from for a World Cup, leaving the Azzurri’s best four best attackers – Fabrizio Miccoli,Antonio CassanoFrancesco Totti and Mario Balotelli – at home.
There was speculation Totti might also come out of international retirement to help Italy defend the World Cup. When Marcello Lippi's squad was announced, there was no sign of his name, nor that of Toni, despite seven strikers being picked.
Switzerland
Switzerland selected its final squad of 23 three weeks early and has included 18-year-old Xherdan Shaqiria, who has only 45 minutes international experience. The FC Basel midfielder made his club debut in July and had his first taste of international soccer against Uruguay in a friendly on March 3.

Argentina

World Cup Comment: Argentina’s Diego Maradona Does The Impossible And Picks A Worse Squad Than Italy, Brazil & France

The omission of Zanetti and Cambiasso is a "crime against football", argues Carlo Garganese...

It was until gone midnight CET that the greatest footballer of all time-turned crazy coach Diego Armando Maradona announced his 30-man preliminary Argentina squad, and El Pibe d’Oro would do the impossible and manage to out-trump Lippi, Dunga and Domenech’s debacles.

Zanetti, Gago, and Esteban Cambiasso - rather ridiculously - won’t be turning out for Argentina this year.
Can you imagine how insanely good Argentina would be this year if they had a halfway competent coach.
